Washington, D.C. Weather Alert: Heat Index Reaches 107°F – Heat Advisory in Effect Until 8 PM Friday

Washington, D.C. – A dangerous heat wave is sweeping through the D.C. metro area and surrounding regions, with heat index values reaching as high as 107°F this Friday. A Heat Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service and will remain in effect until 8 p.m. today.

Heat Advisory Details

The advisory covers the District of Columbia, much of central and northern Maryland, northern and central Virginia, and parts of the West Virginia panhandle. During the peak afternoon hours, heat index values are expected to remain between 102°F and 107°F, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Safety Tips for Residents

Residents from Arlington to Frederick, and throughout Fairfax, Culpeper, and Eastern Allegany County, are urged to limit outdoor activities and seek refuge in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks, wear light clothing, and stay hydrated to avoid overheating.

Metro transit riders and outdoor workers are particularly vulnerable, as high temperatures are expected to persist even after sunset, especially during the evening commute. Cities like Baltimore, Manassas, and Martinsburg may only begin to see some relief after 9 p.m.

Cooling Centers and Community Safety

Cooling centers have been opened in major counties, including Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Loudoun, to provide residents with a safe and cool space during the extreme heat. Officials are also reminding people to check on elderly neighbors and pets, as they are especially at risk during high-heat conditions.

Stay Updated for Possible Weekend Heat

More heat is possible over the weekend, and residents are urged to stay tuned for any further advisories or updates from the National Weather Service.
