Utah Under Red Flag Warning as High Winds and Low Humidity Raise Wildfire Risk

Utah’s fire danger is set to spike on Wednesday as hot, dry, and windy weather moves into the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for parts of the state, including the Salt Lake Desert and Central Utah’s West Desert, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

This warning means wildfire conditions are very high, and even small sparks can quickly grow into dangerous fires.

Strong Winds and Very Low Humidity Expected

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, strong south winds will blow at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. These gusts will be especially strong south of Interstate 80 and west of Tooele.

Adding to the risk, humidity levels are expected to drop to just 10 to 15%, which means the air will be extremely dry—perfect conditions for fires to spread quickly.

Officials Urge Public to Avoid Fire-Starting Activities

Local fire departments and emergency crews are on high alert across Tooele County and other parts of the West Desert. Authorities are urging residents to avoid any outdoor activity that could spark a fire. This includes:

Welding or using power tools outdoors

Burning trash or yard waste

Driving over dry grass

Using fireworks or open flames

Even a small spark could cause a wildfire that spreads within minutes due to the dry air and high winds.

Conditions Could Continue Through the Week

The current Red Flag Warning is set to last through Wednesday evening, but officials say more alerts may be issued if dry and windy conditions continue later in the week.

Residents across the affected areas are asked to stay informed, avoid risky behavior, and report any signs of smoke or fire to emergency services immediately.
