Ohio Valley Weather: August Rainfall Totals Drop to Less Than Half of Normal Levels

Driest August in Years

August wrapped up with some of the driest conditions the Ohio Valley has experienced in recent years. Rainfall totals for the month were less than half of the typical amount, leaving much of the region with significant deficits.

Below-Average Rainfall

According to the National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, the Ohio Valley usually receives between 3 and 4 inches of rain in August. This year, however, the average was closer to 1.5 inches, with areas in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky seeing consistent rainfall deficits, as shown in rainfall maps released Sunday morning.

Impact on Agriculture and Fire Risk

The lack of moisture is expected to stress crops, particularly in western Ohio and central Indiana, where corn and soybean fields were already facing heat strain earlier in the month. Urban areas like Cincinnati, Louisville, and Columbus may also experience an increased fire risk in grassy fields and parks. Additionally, rural areas could face tighter water restrictions if the dry conditions persist.

Precautionary Measures

Officials are urging residents to conserve water, stay informed about local burn bans, and prepare for dustier roadways as the dry spell extends into early September. More advisories may be issued if rainfall does not return soon.
