Ohio Surf Zone Weather: High UV Index and Comfortable Water Temps on Sunday

Beachgoers along the Lake Erie shoreline in Ohio should prepare for a sunny and warm Sunday, with water temperatures in the mid-70s and a “very high” UV index expected to peak across western and eastern Ohio beaches.

Sunny and Warm Conditions

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, maximum air temperatures will reach the upper 70s to low 80s by Sunday afternoon, making it a great day to be by the water. Wave heights will be calm, remaining at 1 foot or less throughout the day, ensuring smooth waters for swimming. However, the primary concern for the day will be the very high UV index. Anyone heading to popular beaches like Avon Point, Vermillion, Geneva-on-the-Lake, or Conneaut should apply sunscreen regularly and seek shade during peak sun hours (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.).

Water Temperatures and Rip Current Risk

Water temperatures will be comfortable across most of Lake Erie, with the west and east coasts seeing mid-70s, while central sections near Reno Beach will have slightly cooler mid-60s water. The risk of rip currents remains low for all monitored areas, including Maumee Bay, Willowick, and the Islands. Still, swimmers should stay close to lifeguards and observe any posted warnings, ensuring a safe experience at the beach.

Thunderstorm Risk

While the weather looks mostly calm, there is a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms for northwest Ohio on Sunday evening, which may shift toward northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania by Monday. These storms could bring brief heavy rain and gusty winds. Beachgoers should stay alert to weather updates and be prepared to take cover if necessary.

Stay Safe and Enjoy the Beach

Swimmers are advised to limit their exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on weather alerts throughout the day. More advisories may be issued if thunderstorms become more intense.
