Elko, NV – A Blowing Dust Advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, across parts of northern Nevada, including Elko and Humboldt counties. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the alert due to strong winds lifting dust into the air, significantly reducing visibility and creating dangerous travel conditions.
Low Visibility Near Burn Scar Areas
The most hazardous areas are expected to be near the Jakes Fire Burn Scar, where high winds are kicking up loose soil, causing blowing dust and sudden drops in visibility. According to the NWS in Elko, visibility in affected areas may fall to as low as one-quarter mile.
Driving Could Be Dangerous
The NWS warns that driving may be hazardous, especially on open highways, rural roads, and exposed stretches of roadway. Motorists are advised to:
Slow down and use extra caution
Avoid travel in dust-prone areas if possible
Pull off the road safely if visibility suddenly drops
Turn off headlights and interior lights once stopped
Do not use emergency brakes, as other drivers may follow taillights and collide with your vehicle
Health Advisory for At-Risk Individuals
Health officials are also urging people, especially those with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory conditions, to stay indoors and avoid exposure to dust. Breathing in fine particles stirred up by the wind can aggravate respiratory issues and lead to discomfort or even medical emergencies.
Stay Informed and Stay Safe
The Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. PDT tonight. Residents are advised to monitor local news, weather updates, and public safety alerts throughout the day.
With strong winds stirring up dust across Northern Nevada, both health and travel are at risk this evening. Whether you’re on the road or at home, it’s best to take precautions, limit exposure, and stay tuned for updates. The advisory is temporary — but the risks are real.
