Scorching Temperatures Across Western Nevada and Northeast California
Triple-digit heat is expected to scorch much of western Nevada and northeast California today, with some areas reaching highs of 103°F before cooler weather arrives midweek. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms are also possible, particularly along the Sierra and Sierra Front, bringing gusty winds and lightning.
Thunderstorm Risks and Fire Concerns
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, storm chances range from 15% to 30% west of U.S. 95 in western Nevada and south of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Valleys. In northeast California, the risk is smaller, ranging from 10% to 15%. However, any storms that develop could spark new fire risks in the dry grasslands of the region.
Hot Temperatures and Heat Safety
Highs are forecasted to reach 98 to 103°F in western Nevada, 86 to 93°F in the Sierra Valleys, and 94 to 102°F in northeast California. Overnight lows will range from the upper 40s in higher elevations to low 70s in the valley floors. Residents are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and be mindful of heat exhaustion symptoms.

A cooler pattern will move in by Wednesday, with temperatures dropping by 10 degrees or more by the end of the week. There is a chance of thunderstorms returning over the weekend.
