New Mexico Weather Alert: Severe Storms and Heat Risk for Clovis and Tucumcari Saturday 2–10 p.m.

Severe weather is expected across eastern New Mexico on Saturday, with isolated storms bringing the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and lightning. The storms will affect areas such as Clovis, Tucumcari, and Clayton from 2 to 10 p.m., disrupting travel and outdoor activities. Along with the storm risks, a heat risk is in place for the state, particularly for central and western New Mexico.

Severe Storm Risk for Eastern New Mexico

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Marginal Risk for severe storms across the eastern third of New Mexico on Saturday. The storms are expected to develop along the Texas border around the afternoon and move westward toward communities like Santa Rosa and Las Vegas by evening.

Hazards include:

Cloud-to-ground lightning

Gusty winds exceeding 50 mph

Large hail

These storms could disrupt travel, especially on highways and rural roads, so residents are advised to stay alert for changing conditions.

Heat Risk for the Weekend and Beyond

In addition to severe storms, New Mexico will experience extreme heat next week, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and low 100s across central and western parts of the state. Roswell is forecast to hit 103°F by Friday. The combination of high heat and humidity will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The high UV index during peak daytime hours (1 to 7 p.m.) adds an extra health risk. Residents should take precautions, including staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and limiting outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Extended Forecast: Storms and Flash Flooding

The severe weather risk will continue through the weekend, with storm chances expected to rise again from Sunday through next week. Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Socorro can expect a 30–60% chance of rain each day. Afternoon storms could bring localized flash flooding, especially in areas with burn scars or poor drainage systems.

Saturday’s weather will bring a combination of severe storms, damaging winds, and large hail across eastern New Mexico. In addition, the state is under a heat risk, with dangerously high temperatures expected next week. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, prepare for storm-related disruptions, and take heat-related precautions as temperatures rise.
