Nebraska Severe Thunderstorm Alert: Golf Ball-Size Hail, Winds, and Heavy Rain Threaten South Until Tonight

Severe thunderstorms are hitting southern Nebraska this evening, bringing dangerous conditions to areas from Holdrege to Beatrice. The storms are expected to produce damaging hail, strong winds, and heavy rainfall, posing risks to residents and drivers.

Severe Storms with Golf Ball-Size Hail and High Winds

The National Weather Service in Hastings reports that severe storms capable of producing golf ball-size hail, winds over 60 mph, and intense rainfall are rapidly developing across southern Nebraska. The storm system, which began at 4:35 p.m. CDT, is affecting areas along Highway 136, from Franklin to Hebron. The strongest storm cells are moving through Superior and heading towards Marysville, Kansas.

Hazardous Travel and Road Conditions

Emergency managers are urging residents in Kearney, Hastings, and York to secure outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages. Roads such as U.S. 281 and Highway 81 may become hazardous due to hail accumulation and localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and rural parts of the state. Motorists are advised to delay non-essential travel, avoid flooded roads, and seek shelter in sturdy buildings if severe weather warnings are issued.

Ongoing Thunderstorm Threats

These storms are part of one of the most active July storm patterns in recent years for Nebraska, and the threat of severe weather is expected to continue through late Monday night. It’s important for residents and travelers to stay updated with local emergency alerts as conditions can change quickly.
