Munster, IN – Emergency crews are investigating reports of an odor and visible sheen near inactive BP pipelines in Munster after multiple calls were made Tuesday from residents in the southwest corner of Cobblestones.
According to a press release from the Munster Fire Department, firefighters identified underground BP pipelines in the area and reached out to BP for assistance. BP confirmed that their response crews identified the sheen, which could indicate petroleum or other substances spreading across a water surface.
The company has placed absorbent booms in the affected area to contain and collect the material, and crews are working with local authorities to pinpoint the source. Air monitoring has been set up as a precaution, but no elevated readings were detected as of Wednesday.
A sheen on water often appears shiny or iridescent, typically signaling the presence of oil. Even a small sheen can suggest a petroleum leak, making it an important sign in environmental assessments. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and follow any instructions from on-scene personnel until further notice.
