People living in Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina should prepare for heavy rain and possible flooding from Monday night into Tuesday. The worst conditions are expected along the I-85 corridor, especially between Seneca, Greenville, and Anderson.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall in a short period, with some areas getting even more. This kind of heavy downpour may lead to dangerous flash floods, especially in low-lying and urban areas.
Most Rain Expected Overnight Through Tuesday Morning
The rain is expected to become heavier after midnight and continue into Tuesday morning. Some areas may get over 4 inches of rain, especially near the southern escarpment and north of I-85. These areas are at the highest risk of sudden flooding.
The cities most affected include Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Seneca, and Gaffney. In Western North Carolina, places like Asheville and Waynesville may see lighter but still steady rain, with totals around 1 to 2 inches.
Flooding Could Happen Before Sunrise
One of the biggest dangers is that most of the flooding could happen before sunrise, when it’s harder to see water covering roads. Flooded roads can be extremely risky. Even shallow water can sweep away a vehicle or cause accidents.
Emergency services are asking everyone to avoid non-essential travel during this time. If you must drive, never try to cross a flooded road, no matter how shallow the water may look. It’s always better to wait until it’s safe.
Cities and Roads Most at Risk
The I-85 corridor is the main area where flooding is expected. This includes:
Seneca
Greenville
Anderson
Spartanburg
Gaffney
Drivers using these roads and nearby local streets should be very cautious. Flood-prone areas like underpasses, small bridges, and poorly drained roads can fill up fast during a storm like this.
Stay Alert and Follow Weather Updates
While the rain may ease by Tuesday afternoon, there is still a chance of more storms later. The National Weather Service will continue to issue updates if the weather worsens or changes suddenly.
Residents are advised to:
Keep mobile phones charged
Enable weather alerts
Avoid travel at night if not necessary
Keep an eye on local news for the latest updates
Being prepared and alert during this weather can help avoid accidents and keep everyone safe.
