Greenwood, S.C. – Drivers in western South Carolina are facing hazardous road conditions this morning due to flash flooding caused by heavy overnight rainfall. Flash flood warnings have been issued for parts of Greenwood, Abbeville, and McCormick counties, with localized flooding making roads impassable.
Areas Affected by Flooding
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Greenville-Spartanburg and Columbia, the flash flood warnings remain in effect until 9:15 a.m. for eastern Abbeville and northwestern Greenwood counties, and until 8:30 a.m. for central McCormick County. Radar estimates indicate that 2 to 3.5 inches of rain have already fallen since 3 a.m., with up to an additional inch possible.
The heavy rain has led to flooding in key areas, including around Long Cane Creek, McCord Creek, and Keller Branch. Reports of street flooding have been received from Abbeville, Ware Shoals, and Promised Land, while McCormick County Airport and Hawe Creek Campground are also experiencing rising water levels.
Safety Precautions and Travel Advisory
The NWS is urging residents to avoid driving on flooded roads, particularly in areas near creeks, underpasses, and zones with poor drainage. If you encounter a flooded road, the best advice is to turn around rather than risk driving through submerged routes.
Although the rain is expected to ease by midmorning, the ground remains saturated, which means flooding risks could persist. Additional flood alerts may be issued if more storms develop in the region.
