Georgia, along with Arizona, does not observe Daylight Saving Time (DST) primarily because of their extremely hot summers. By not shifting the clocks forward, these states avoid an additional hour of heat in the late afternoon and evening.
Comfort and Cooler Evenings
The main benefit of not observing DST is that residents can enjoy cooler temperatures for longer periods during the evening. With the extra daylight extending into the hottest part of the day, temperatures can become uncomfortable, especially in the summer.
Lack of Significant Energy Savings
For Georgia and Arizona, the typical benefits of DST—such as energy savings from extended daylight—don’t apply as much. The states don’t experience significant energy savings by adjusting their clocks, which is another reason why they choose not to participate.
