Since January 20, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested more than 1,000 illegal workers who were found to be working in the U.S. without proper employment authorization. This is part of a growing effort by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) team to both remove unauthorized workers and take strong action against the businesses that hire them.
This increase in enforcement reflects the government’s tougher stance on illegal immigration and workplace violations, aiming to protect American workers and ensure businesses follow the law.
Record-Breaking Enforcement Efforts
According to HSI acting Director Robert Hammer, this is the highest arrest rate in the agency’s history. Investigations are also underway into about 1,200 businesses that have been issued subpoenas for their employment records. These reviews have already led to nearly $1 million in proposed fines.
The work is being carried out under the authority of President Donald Trump’s executive order “Protecting the American People Against Invasion.” It directs enforcement of immigration laws, especially where illegal entry and unlawful presence are concerned.
Holding Businesses Accountable
ICE is not only focusing on the workers but also the employers. Many of these businesses knowingly hire unauthorized workers, which is illegal under federal law. “Businesses that exploit and hire illegal workers are harming the American public,” said Hammer. ICE’s goal is to ensure compliance with U.S. immigration laws and to protect law-abiding businesses and American jobs.
As a result of this enforcement, ICE has ramped up inspections and audits of business employment records. Companies found to be in violation may face fines or even criminal charges.
Major Operations Across the U.S.
ICE has carried out multiple operations across different states. In one major case, ICE and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division took legal action against a Chinese money laundering ring. This group ran a staffing company that placed unauthorized workers in an Ohio factory, helping them stay hidden and employed. Authorities seized 14 properties, seven bank accounts, and 15 vehicles as part of the investigation.
Other notable operations include arrests in Louisiana (11 individuals), Pennsylvania (4 individuals), and New Jersey (16 individuals). These numbers show the scale and seriousness of ICE’s nationwide effort to tackle unauthorized employment.
Preventing Future Violations: The IMAGE Program
To help businesses avoid hiring unauthorized workers and avoid legal problems, ICE offers the IMAGE program. IMAGE (ICE Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers) provides employers with training on identifying fake documents, understanding labor laws, and preventing child or forced labor. Participating in IMAGE can help businesses strengthen their hiring process and ensure full compliance with employment eligibility rules.
