Lowcountry sends a crew to help typhoon survivors in Alaska

Charleston County, South Carolina – South Carolina is contributing more aid to disaster relief operations following huge storms that ravaged sections of western Alaska.

Owen Kutscher and Ben Webster will go out on Tuesday to assist with the recovery efforts. Kutscher will be the State’s Situation Unit Leader. He is in charge of calculating the damages for the Incident Commanders and elected officials. Webster will act as the Volunteer Agency Liaison. He will manage the distribution of materials to survivors.

“Recovering people’s livelihood,” Kutscher stated. “Their homes have been taken from them, their normal way of life has been taken from them, and so have their entire communities.”

Typhoon Halong caused record floods in several localities, displacing thousands of people. Since Monday, almost 600 more individuals have been brought to safety in Anchorage.

“They’re worried about family and friends and the harsh reality of Alaska,” Webster told me. “It’s a very different frontier from what we have here in South Carolina. Just getting them the aid they need and assisting them in rebuilding as quickly as possible.”

According to officials, both storms damaged around 90% of Kipnuk’s structures, and the water supply is believed to be poisoned.
