Tybee Island Police Department recently installed a new Flock Safety license plate reader at the Lazaretto Creek Bridge, expanding their existing network to enhance public safety.

System Expansion

The department now operates 28 Flock devices island-wide, with plans to reach 33. These automated readers capture license plate data and vehicle details—without continuous video feeds—to alert officers of matches against hotlists for stolen vehicles, wanted persons, or emergencies.

Proven Applications

Since 2022, the technology has aided in solving felony thefts, hit-and-runs, shootings, and welfare checks for mental health crises or dementia cases. Captain Emory Randolph emphasizes it helps officers respond faster without a “magical forcefield,” countering online misinformation about surveillance overreach.

Public Safety Role

While controversial, police view it as a vital tool for proactive crime deterrence, especially if it protects property or family—urging residents to verify social media claims against facts.
