The South Carolina Port Authority advances infrastructure projects to increase port efficiency

South Carolina Port Authority (SC Ports) officials revealed significant strides in two key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the Port of Charleston and the Leatherman Terminal. These efforts are set to increase the capacity and efficiency of the port, solidifying its position as a top container port in the U.S.

Electric Cranes to Boost Rail Facility Capacity

A major milestone was reached with the erection of six electric rail-mounted gantry cranes at the Leatherman Rail Facility, which is scheduled to open in 2026. These cranes are a critical part of the facility’s infrastructure, and work has already begun by Kuenz to commission them. Once fully operational, the facility will be capable of handling 1 million rail lifts per year, significantly enhancing rail efficiency at the port.

Barbara Melvin, President and CEO of SC Ports, emphasized the importance of these investments: “The investments SC Ports makes today, with backing from our state leaders, keep our port system ready to meet projected demand. The continued growth of our inland rail facilities and our commitment to enhancing efficiency for our customers necessitated this critical infrastructure expansion.”

Dedicated Drayage Road and Leatherman Terminal Expansion

Further progress is being made on a one-mile, dedicated drayage road that will separate intermodal traffic from Interstate 26, improving traffic flow and safety for both port workers and the public. This dedicated road will streamline operations, further increasing efficiency as the port grows.

At the Leatherman Terminal, the expansion project has entered its second phase, with the installation of test piles for the wharf extension. This extension, which will add 1,600 feet to the wharf, will provide space for five additional ship-to-shore cranes, enhancing the terminal’s ability to handle larger volumes of cargo.

A Vision for Continued Growth

SC Ports officials believe these infrastructure upgrades are crucial for maintaining the port’s competitive edge. Melvin added, “These projects are essential to keep SC Ports competitive as a top 10 U.S. container port for decades to come.”

The ongoing investments in port infrastructure reflect the growing demand for container shipping and demonstrate South Carolina’s commitment to maintaining and expanding its role as a key player in global trade.
