A long-awaited pedestrian improvement project is set to move forward along one of Charleston’s most iconic streets. The new sidewalk, spanning the west side of East Bay Street from Charlotte Street to Chapel Street, is scheduled to begin construction soon.
Project Details and Features
The project involves installing 310 feet of five-foot-wide concrete sidewalk to fill in a previously missing segment. It will also feature a granite curb, accessible ramps, and other elements aimed at creating a safer, more inclusive walking space for pedestrians. According to officials, the sidewalk will not only enhance pedestrian safety but also improve traffic flow and help with sediment control in the area.
Charleston County Public Works Manager Alex Owsiak explained that the funding for the sidewalk was originally requested by the City of Charleston in 2022, with a total project cost of nearly $150,000. He highlighted the importance of the project in making East Bay Street more accessible and safer for both pedestrians and individuals with disabilities.
Project Funding and Process
Owsiak shared that the project was evaluated using a ranking system approved by the Charleston County Council. This system helps determine which projects provide the best value based on cost and the improvements they bring to the community. After several attempts to secure a qualified contractor, the necessary funding and contractors have now come together to move the project forward.
“The project really provides a solid walking surface for both pedestrians and handicapped individuals, with a detectable warning surface for those with visual impairments. It also includes a crosswalk to make the area safer and to alert drivers to expect pedestrian crossings,” said Owsiak.
Timeline for Construction
Construction on the sidewalk is expected to begin within the next 30 to 45 days, with an anticipated completion date by the end of the year.
