The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is hosting a public meeting in Anderson to gather community feedback on their proposed safety improvement project for North Murray Avenue along Highway 76, near Linley Park. Here are the main points about the project:
- Project Details: The proposed improvements include repaving the road and implementing a “lane diet,” which means reducing driving lanes to improve safety, mobility, and traffic flow. The updated road configuration will feature three lanes, with a two-way left-turn lane in the center and buffered bike lanes on the sides.
- Pedestrian Safety: Local resident Margaret Carter, who frequently walks in the area, expressed hope that the project will enhance pedestrian safety. She noted that while flashing pedestrian signs have had some impact on driver behavior, there is still a need for consistent traffic safety measures.
- Improvements Near Linley Park: The project near Linley Park will include single driving lanes in both directions, with bike lanes, shoulder buffers, and parking lanes. Additionally, the left-turn movement from East North Street onto Whitehall will be improved with dedicated left-turn lanes, new pavement markings, and updated traffic signals.
- Timeline: The project is expected to take several months to complete, with a target finish date this summer. Contractors are already working on full-depth patching in preparation for the resurfacing project, which is set to begin this spring.
- Public Input: The public is invited to provide feedback on the project until March 13. SCDOT is also displaying maps showing the proposed lane configurations for review and discussion at the public meeting.
This roadwork is part of a broader 2026 Pavement Improvement Plan by SCDOT aimed at improving road infrastructure across the state.
