Next week, Charleston County will begin the 21st Avenue Sidewalk Widening and Extension Project on Isle of Palms. This important project will enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility by replacing the existing sidewalk along 21st Avenue and part of Palm Boulevard with a wider, ADA-compliant sidewalk.

Project Details

The project will involve removing and replacing the current sidewalk with a 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalk that meets ADA standards. While the work will improve pedestrian access, there will be no road closures. However, parts of the sidewalk will be closed during the construction, so pedestrians are advised to plan alternate routes.

The original plan was for the sidewalk replacement to occur outside of the busy summer season. However, Charleston County has confirmed that the project must proceed now, and work will begin next week.

Important Reminders for Residents

While there are no planned road closures, residents and visitors should remain cautious of crews working in the area. The city encourages everyone to be mindful of construction zones and to follow any posted detour signs or pedestrian route changes to ensure safety.
