Folly Road Improvement Project Moves Forward
The City of Charleston Committee of Traffic and Transportation recently held a meeting to discuss updates on the Folly Road Improvement Project. This project is part of a larger effort to improve traffic flow and safety along one of the area’s busiest roads.
City leaders have already approved the plan proposed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), which includes adding raised medians along Folly Road.
Why Raised Medians Are Being Proposed
According to SCDOT officials, the raised medians are meant to improve road safety by reducing accidents and controlling traffic movement. They can help prevent dangerous turns and organise how vehicles enter and exit the main road.
Officials also shared that they made some changes to the plan after hearing feedback. For example, access has been adjusted to allow left turns into certain areas like Highland Avenue and Santee Street, aiming to balance safety with convenience.
Residents and Businesses Raise Concerns
Despite these adjustments, many residents and local leaders from James Island are still unhappy with the proposal. They believe the raised medians could make it harder to access homes, streets, and businesses.
Local business owners are especially concerned. Hyams Garden Center owner George Hyams explained that delivery trucks may have to take longer routes through neighbourhoods and make U-turns, which could disrupt operations and hurt business.
Town Council Pushes Back
The James Island Town Council has officially requested that the raised medians be removed from the plan. However, this request is still under review, and no final decision has been made yet.
Possible Legal Complications
Officials also warned that if the town decides to reject the project entirely, it could face legal challenges. Since funding has already been allocated for safety improvements, stopping the project might lead to disputes between the town and state authorities.
This puts local leaders in a difficult position, as they try to balance community concerns with legal and safety responsibilities.
