Charleston County, South Carolina — The Charleston County School District Board of Trustees approved the provisions of Superintendent Anita Huggins’ contract renewal in an 8-1 vote at its Nov. 10 meeting.
Superintendent Huggins’ tenure has been extended to June 30, 2031, as part of the agreed agreement. The contract also includes a provision for an annual one-year automatic extension commencing in 2031, subject to a favorable superintendent review for the previous year, as indicated in the original contract.
In addition, a revision to Section 4.f changes the superintendent’s remuneration structure by substituting mileage reimbursement with a market-rate automobile allowance. The allowance will be certified annually by the district’s chief financial officer, confirmed by general counsel, and handled using conventional payroll with all appropriate withholdings, officials said.
Board Chair Pamela McKinney, who signed the contract on November 14, stated that concluding the deal is a critical step toward maintaining transparent governance and assuring continuity in district leadership.
“Completing and executing this contract is part of our responsibility to the public,” McKinney told the audience. “It assures that the Board’s authorized terms are clear, transparent, and completely compliant with state and district regulations. Superintendent Huggins has proven great leadership, and this concluded agreement represents both our trust in her work and our commitment to stability for students, staff, and families.”
Superintendent Anita Huggins expressed gratitude for the Board’s trust and emphasized her commitment to the job ahead.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the students and families of Charleston County,” says Huggins. “Finalizing this agreement provides clarity as we move forward, and my commitment remains centered on student outcomes, strong instruction, and the daily work that supports our schools.”
On November 14, Board Chair McKinney and Superintendent Huggins signed the finished agreement, which will be put into the district record.
