Berkeley County, South Carolina – As families dress up and take to the streets tonight for Halloween, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to stay safe.

There will be an increased presence of deputies and police officers in the community to ensure that the roads and neighborhoods remain safe for trick-or-treaters and families. Deputies also emphasize the need of each individual taking their own safety precautions.

Trick-or-treaters should observe these guidelines while celebrating:

Increase visibility: Put luminous tape on your costumes and baggage, and carry a flashlight or glow stick to assist drivers see you.
Wear safe costumes: Select non-flammable costumes that fit properly to avoid tripping and falls.
Always go trick-or-treating with friends or a trusted adult.
Walk, not run: Stay on sidewalks, cross streets at intersections and crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing.
Only accept sealed treats. Before eating any sweets, have it checked by an adult.
Be cautious: Never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle under any circumstances.

Additionally, drivers must be cautious. Drivers are instructed to slow down, drive carefully, and expect children on the road. Turn on your headlights to illuminate anyone on the road, and keep attentive near neighborhoods and crosswalks.
