NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Keep North Charleston Beautiful (KNCB) is marking its 25th anniversary by launching a new initiative aimed at engaging local groups in cleaning up and beautifying the city. The “25 for 2025” litter cleanup project encourages 25 local groups to participate in activities such as litter pickups and other beautification efforts.

As of July, 13 community groups have already contributed, helping KNCB reach the halfway point toward its goal. Volunteers have been working in neighborhoods, parks, and gardens, and the organization is offering free litter supply kits to assist in these efforts.

Community-Led Cleanup: A Sense of Ownership

KNCB’s Beautification Manager, Carmen Hanlon, explained the importance of local involvement in the cleanup efforts. “We wanted to do the 25-litter cleanup as a goal because it’s something that the community can do on their own,” Hanlon said. “They have ownership of that area. When they see litter, they go back out and pick it up. It means something to them.”

The initiative aims to create a sense of pride among residents by encouraging them to take responsibility for the cleanliness and beauty of their own neighborhoods. “It’s not a group coming in that doesn’t live there, that doesn’t see it every day,” Hanlon added.

A Family Reunion with a Purpose

One exciting partnership involves a family reunion that will double as a community cleanup effort. Over 25 family members will be participating in KNCB’s community garden project, where they will help with tasks like installing mulch, planting flowers, and propagating plants for next fall. This unique approach not only beautifies the city but also fosters a spirit of giving back.

Hanlon expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “We really encourage people to come visit our parks and make them look more beautiful for somebody else. It’s really an out-of-the-box plan to come and do your family reunion as part of giving back to the community.”

Volunteer Opportunities for All

KNCB’s events are open to people of all ages, levels, and abilities. Whether it’s helping clean up trash, assisting with landscaping, or working on community gardens, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Both indoor and outdoor activities are available, making it easy for anyone to lend a hand.

“It really is very important for people to help with getting everything cleaned up, it’s a sense of pride,” said Hanlon. “We’ve had groups who have adopted certain areas, and now those places are spotless. It’s just a sense of pride for everybody.”

Ongoing Cleanup Events and Opportunities

In addition to monthly events, KNCB also holds regular activities in its community gardens and Quarterman Park. Community members can even sponsor a park or flowerbed to support the organization’s ongoing beautification efforts. KNCB is a part of Keep America Beautiful and Palmetto Pride, working to improve the city’s appearance and inspire a sense of community ownership.
