Southern Living claims that SC has one of the most renowned grocery stores in the South. Here's why

Burbage’s Grocery, located in Charleston’s South of Broad neighborhood, has earned a spot on Southern Living’s list of the 10 legendary grocery stores in the South.

This 80-year-old store has become a beloved staple in the community, known for its okra soup, store-made tomato pie, and a variety of delicious meals like hot dogs, hamburgers, and sausage and egg muffins.

A Family Legacy

Originally founded by Al Burbage and later run by his son Robert, the store is now owned by Lisa and George Bowen, who took over in 2013.

Lisa Bowen, who has a background in retail, said, “We wanted to save the store,” and it has since become a family affair, with their three children working there. The youngest is even expected to take over the store one day.

“We’re the mom and pop of the mom and pop store,” Lisa Bowen said, referring to the iconic spot at the corner of Broad and Savage streets.

A Hub for the Community

Burbage’s is a favorite among locals. It’s common to see children crowding in after school or neighbors stopping by for something from the deli or bakery.

The store has earned a reputation for being a friendly, neighborhood gathering place where both residents and visitors alike can enjoy homemade dishes and local specialties.

In addition to the soups (such as chili, Brunswick stew, and potato vichyssoise), there’s an extensive wine collection, locally brewed beer, and a full-service deli. As Alana Al-Hatlani, food editor at Southern Living, put it, “Burbage’s is an institution.”

A Southern Favorite

Southern Living’s list also includes other standout stores from around the South, including:

  • Your DeKalb Farmers Market in Decatur, Georgia
  • Phoenicia Specialty Foods in Houston, Texas
  • Modica Market in Seaside, Florida
  • Pruett’s Market in Signal Mountain, Tennessee
  • Buford Highway Farmers Market in Doraville, Georgia
  • The B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery in Water Valley, Mississippi
  • Dorignac’s Food Center in Metairie, Louisiana
  • High Point Grocery in Memphis, Tennessee

What Makes Burbage’s Special?

It’s not just the food that makes Burbage’s a legendary grocery store—it’s the community connection. “Some of the best souvenirs come from the condiments aisle,” Al-Hatlani said, referring to the local delicacies found in stores like Burbage’s.

The store also serves as a go-to destination for ready-made sides and desserts during Thanksgiving, further solidifying its role as a central part of Charleston’s local food culture.
