The UNCW Seahawks secured an impressive 8-2 victory over the Charleston Cougars in a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) softball matchup held in Wilmington. The win helped UNCW clinch the series and continue their strong conference run.
Game Overview
The match remained competitive in the early innings, with both teams scoring once each. Charleston’s Halle Cannon and UNCW’s Sierra Persinger contributed early runs, keeping the score tight.
However, the turning point came when freshman Ava Brookshire hit her first career home run, giving UNCW a narrow 2-1 lead.
Decisive Fifth Inning
The game changed completely in the fifth inning when UNCW scored five runs. The team showed excellent batting performance, collecting multiple hits in quick succession. Cassidy Relay and Emily Whitwell played key roles at the top of the order, helping build momentum.
The highlight of the inning came from Madison Biddle, who smashed a three-run double that cleared the bases and extended UNCW’s lead. This powerful hit effectively sealed the match for the Seahawks.
Strong Pitching Performance
UNCW’s pitcher Taylor Barlow delivered a solid performance, allowing just two runs over more than five innings. She was supported by Camille Hamilton, who closed out the game efficiently.
On the other side, Charleston’s Mackenzie Mathis pitched six innings but gave up six earned runs, which made it difficult for her team to stay in the game.
Series Impact
With this victory, UNCW improved their record to 18-13 overall and 6-2 in conference play. The win also secured their second CAA series of the season. Meanwhile, Charleston dropped to 16-20 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
The Seahawks will now look to complete a series sweep in the final game, while Charleston will aim to bounce back and avoid a clean sweep.
