ISLE OF PALMS, South Carolina — The too-close-to-call contest for Isle of Palms mayor is over, with incumbent Phillip Pounds gaining a second term by a single vote.

According to verified results from the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections, Pounds defeated competitor Scott Pierce, a municipal councilman, 947-946 in the runoff election on November 18.

The two candidates were separated by less than half a percentage point after all votes were cast on election night, with provisional ballots remaining to be counted.

Pierce received 10 votes when those ballots were counted Thursday morning, but it was insufficient to overcome Pounds’ lead. The razor-thin margin also resulted in an automatic recount.

Pierce has until 7 p.m. Thursday to appeal the runoff results with the elections board, according to executive director Isaac Cramer. If this happens, the board will hear the challenge on Friday morning.
