Human remains discovered earlier this year in Elbert County have now been identified as a man who was reported missing in 2024, bringing closure to a months-long search.
Remains Found on Private Property
According to the Elbert County Coroner’s Office, the remains were first discovered on January 26, 2025, after a homeowner called 911 to report possible human remains on their property.
Authorities launched an investigation to determine the identity of the individual.
Identification Made Nearly a Year Later
On April 4, 2026, officials confirmed the remains belonged to 76-year-old Fred Louis Dubose of Elberton.
Dubose had been reported missing in September 2024 after walking away from his home on Huntington Drive.
Extensive Search Efforts
Following his disappearance, multiple search operations were carried out over several months.
Agencies involved included the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, Elbert County Emergency Services, the Georgia State Patrol, K9 search teams, and numerous volunteers.
Closure for the Family
Officials say the identification was made possible through ongoing investigative and forensic work.
Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond praised the efforts of those involved, calling it the result of “tireless work” by investigators and forensic teams.
Authorities say the identification brings long-awaited closure to Dubose’s family after nearly a year of uncertainty.
