One person died when an SUV and a big rig caught fire on Interstate 77, according to a trooper.

A lady died when a tractor-trailer driver collided with an SUV on Interstate 77 southbound in Statesville, engulfing both vehicles in flames, State Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Casey said Friday.

Kimberly Taylor Cox, 60, of York, South Carolina, died at Atrium Wake-Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, according to a news release from Casey. Three dogs in the SUV also killed, he stated.

The SUV driver, Daniel Lawrence Heisig of Charlotte, 40, was stopped in traffic around mile marker 49 around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the trooper. Casey said Heisig was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Freightliner tractor-trailer, Aniello Marro Chavarria, 56, of Statesville, was not harmed, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Once troopers have completed their investigation, they will confer with Iredell County prosecutors about pursuing charges in the collision.

I-77 was stopped for around four hours while troopers investigated.
