Lowcountry fire stations are now offering free car seat inspections.

Parents in the Lowcountry area of South Carolina now have access to free car seat inspections at the Dorchester County Council building and participating fire stations. These services stem from recent training completed by first responders from Summerville, Dorchester County, North Charleston, and Charleston County with MUSC.

Event Details

The first inspections occur Friday at 500 North Main Street from 10 a.m. to noon, taking less than 10 minutes per check. Residents can also visit fire stations across these counties, with appointments encouraged via Dorchester County EMS.

Safety Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 60% of car seats are misused, but proper use reduces infant injuries by 71% and toddler injuries by 54%. Common issues include loose straps and incorrect facing direction, addressed in the four-day technician training.

Training Focus

First responders learned advanced installation techniques and evolved safety technologies, as noted by Dorchester County EMS Chief Joseph Crowder. The program aims to prevent pediatric deaths from motor vehicle accidents due to improper restraints.
