IOP leaders consider modifications to the noise restriction at night

Residents of Isle of Palms could soon enjoy quieter nights as city leaders move forward with a proposal to limit noise levels during evening hours. The new noise ordinance aims to address long-standing concerns from residents about excessive late-night disturbances in what is primarily a peaceful, residential island community.

Proposed Ordinance Focuses on Nighttime Noise

Under the new plan, the city would implement a maximum decibel limit of 55 for nighttime hours. This would apply to:

Music and radios

Parties or gatherings

Yelling, shouting, or other loud sounds

If passed, the limits would go into effect at the following times:

Weekdays: From 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Weekends: From 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Any noise that goes above 55 decibels during those hours — whether from homes, rentals, or businesses — could lead to violations and fines.

Balancing Fun and Peace

Councilman John Bogosian, who is helping lead the effort, says the proposed limits strike a fair balance between allowing visitors to enjoy the island and giving residents the quiet they deserve at night.

“We welcome people to come and have a good time,” Bogosian said. “But at nighttime, let’s recognize that this is a residential area. Children need to sleep. Adults need to go to work. It’s about being considerate.”

The goal, he explained, is simple: you shouldn’t be able to hear outside noise inside your home late at night.

Why 55 Decibels?

For context, 55 decibels is about the level of a normal conversation or the hum of a refrigerator. It’s a clear drop from typical party or music noise, which often reaches 70–90 decibels or more.

This limit is seen as reasonable by many cities looking to manage sound pollution in mixed-use or residential areas.

Next Steps and Public Input

The noise ordinance is still in the discussion stage. The Public Safety Committee will review the proposal again in October, after which it will move to City Council for further consideration and a public vote.

There will also be opportunities for residents and stakeholders to provide input before any changes are finalized.

As Isle of Palms continues to grow in popularity as a vacation spot, city leaders are working to ensure that its charm as a peaceful, family-friendly community isn’t lost. The proposed nighttime noise ordinance aims to protect residents’ sleep, health, and overall quality of life, while still allowing for fun and entertainment — just at a more respectful volume after dark.
