Inmates suspected of murder allegedly attacked another inmate in jail

Two Gaston County inmates already facing murder charges are now accused of attempting to kill another inmate while in custody, according to prosecutors.

Alleged Attack Inside Jail

Prosecutors say jail surveillance video shows Marquan Marshall and Jamony Kennedy escaping their cells by disabling the door lock using a bottle cap.

Authorities allege the two men waited for a detention officer to leave a nearby common area before making their move. They then ran out of their cells and attacked another inmate.

During the incident, prosecutors say the suspects returned to retrieve a makeshift weapon before continuing the assault.

Serious Charges Already Pending

Marshall is currently awaiting trial on three murder charges, including a 2023 double homicide in Mount Holly.

Kennedy has been charged in connection with the robbery and killing of a Hunter Huss High School student last year.

Both men are being held without bond.

Prior Concerns and Ongoing Questions

Prosecutors noted that Marshall has a prior charge related to an attack on a detention officer.

Officials have not disclosed why the inmate was targeted in the alleged attack.

Questions also remain about jail security. Local media has reached out to the sheriff’s office to ask whether steps are being taken to prevent inmates from using similar methods to bypass cell locks. A response has not yet been provided.

Investigation Continues

The case remains under investigation as authorities review the incident and consider additional charges related to the alleged attack.
