Charleston, S.C. – Charleston City Councilman Mike Seekings, a four-term incumbent, officially announced his candidacy for a fifth term on Monday. The announcement came with a focus on addressing some of the city’s most pressing issues as he seeks to continue serving District 8.
Key Areas of Focus for Seekings
“As we navigate rapid change – from flooding threats to transportation challenges and continued economic growth – I’m running again to serve District 8 with a focus on results in key areas such as infrastructure improvements, neighborhood safety, tourism management, and livability for residents,” Seekings stated in his campaign announcement.
Seekings currently serves as chair of the Traffic and Transportation Committee and the Audit Committee, vice-chair of the Ways and Means Committee, and is also a member of the Public Safety and Public Works Committees. Additionally, he represents Charleston on several regional boards, including the Charleston Regional Aviation Authority, the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA), the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments, and serves as secretary for the Charleston Area Transportation Study.
Serving the Community and Securing Resources
“My work in the region begins with District 8,” Seekings emphasized. “Our residents’ voices are heard where decisions are made at the city, county, state, and federal levels. That translates into more resources and influence on projects and issues that are most important to us, including ongoing and upcoming efforts like the Low Battery Extension, Calhoun-West drainage project, and Lockwood flood protection.”
Seekings, first elected in 2009, has served continuously since representing District 8, which covers parts of downtown Charleston, including the Battery and South of Broad, as well as the eastern portion of Daniel Island.
