MONCKS CORNER, SC – The long-awaited huge boat landing project on Lake Moultrie will be completed in 2026.
Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb provided an update on a major boat landing project on Monday.
According to Cribb, the project will include a waterfront park on Lake Moultrie at the former Atkins Boat Landing and Lions Beach location.
The project costs more than $10 million and includes a boat landing on 15 acres of property. The plans indicate that there will be six boat ramps with enough capacity for 16 boats. A.6-mile walking trail is expected to surround the landing. The marina will provide capacity for 36 vessels to dock.
A more than 4,000-square-foot open-air pavilion will be available for events such as competitions and concerts. Crews will renovate the existing 7,300-square-foot pavilion on the property for future rental potential.
Crews are presently dredging and building a seawall along the lake. Cribb said they’re working to finish water work ahead of the ecological fishery bedding season, which starts in February.
Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said the park will also have an emergency safe boat cage for 24-hour marine patrol on the sea.
Plans indicate that guests will have access to two public beaches. Visitors will notice 185 boat parking spots as well as 185 automobile parking spaces that can be converted into additional boat spaces.
The concept was originally anticipated to cost $6.5 million in 2021. According to Cribb, rising building costs have driven up the project’s price over time.
According to Cribb, a significant reason for the project’s delay was the permit to begin work in the water. He claims dredging was absolutely necessary to eliminate the hundreds of shallow places off the site’s boat ramp.
“Between staffing levels and a unique time with COVID, the decision was made to do it right,” Cribb tells me. “We would have been waiting for a permit if we had known about these dynamics earlier.” “We would have had to wait a long time for a permit.”
He said the park will host tournaments and activities that will boost the county’s tourism.
“There’s a tournament coming here, say in June of ‘2027,” Cribb tells me. “They will return here several times to train before June of 27. In June of ’27, their families and other onlookers will flock to the area, causing a surge in business for restaurants, hotels, and gas stations.
The park is slated to open on May 18, 2026.
