Following the deadly St. Johns space heater fire, firefighters advise care

Following recent fires in Charleston County, including a fatal incident on Wadmalaw Island on Dec. 7 and an injury in Colleton County on Dec. 4, both linked to space heaters, officials urge strict safety measures as Lowcountry temperatures drop.

St. Johns Fire District Deputy Fire Marshal Edward Singleton emphasizes a critical 3-foot clearance zone around heaters to prevent ignition of nearby combustibles like bedding, clothes, or furniture.

Key Safety Guidelines

  • Never use space heaters while sleeping or unattended, and always equip them with tip-over protection.
  • Plug directly into a wall outlet, avoiding power strips or extension cords to prevent overheating.
  • Place on a hard, level, nonflammable surface away from high-traffic areas, children, pets, and combustibles.

Space heaters offer safe supplemental warmth when used properly but can be dangerous otherwise. Test smoke detector batteries monthly; contact St. Johns Fire District for help with checks or replacements.
