Florence leaders make plans to pull down the empty mansion.

The city of Florence is taking steps to tear down a long-vacant home on the corner of Darlington and Lucas streets, a property some residents have called an eyesore for decades. The two-story house, often used as a landmark for giving directions downtown, has stood empty for years.

City leaders plan to acquire the property through eminent domain, a legal process that allows a government to take private property for public use. Officials say the process could take several weeks to complete.

Mixed Emotions From Community Members

Jerry Grant, a barber at Thompson’s Barber Shop on Dargan Street, says while the building is now considered an eyesore, it still holds sentimental value. Grant has worked at the shop for nearly four decades and says the house was once part of the community’s fabric. He believes residents should have input on what happens next and suggests the property could be refurbished or rebuilt for community use, possibly benefiting children or neighborhood programs.

Business Owner Supports Demolition

Sheldon Thompson, owner of Thompson’s Barber Shop and Barber College, has operated on Dargan Street for nearly 50 years. He says he has rarely seen activity at the house in recent years and believes it is time for it to be removed.

City officials say the current plan is to use the land to install gas tanks for fuel pumps that would service city employees.
