A routine traffic stop Friday night in Whitmire escalated after officers reported smelling marijuana and spotting a firearm inside a vehicle at the Lil Cricket convenience store. During the stop, one suspect, Kyshawn Ware, fled the scene and was picked up by a second vehicle, prompting further law enforcement response.
Patrol Car Rammed During Pursuit
According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the second vehicle rammed a deputy’s patrol car while attempting to escape. The chase ended near the Whitmire Community Center, where three individuals jumped from the vehicle. Authorities say one suspect, identified as Jalen Hamrick, pulled a gun on deputies before being disarmed.
Five Arrested, One Suspect Still Sought
In total, five people were arrested and multiple firearms were recovered. The Sheriff’s Office stated that all of the individuals are known gang members who were in town for a party at the community center. Law enforcement officials are continuing to search for the alleged driver, Jonathan Thompson.
