FIRST ALERT: Barry touches down; Florida may see the next storm

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Tropical Depression Barry made landfall on the east coast of Mexico late Sunday night, with forecasters shifting their focus to potential tropical development near Florida this week.

At 11:00 p.m., the center of the depression was located just inland near latitude 22.0 north, longitude 97.8 west. The system is moving northwest at 9 mph, and this general motion is expected to continue overnight.

Barry Weakens

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 35 mph, with higher gusts. The depression is expected to continue weakening and is forecast to dissipate over eastern Mexico by Monday. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 mb (29.74 inches).

Potential Tropical Development Near Florida

While Tropical Depression Barry is weakening, forecasters are closely monitoring a frontal boundary that could lead to tropical development by the end of the week or into the weekend. This system could form somewhere between the western tip of the Florida panhandle and the Carolinas coast.

As of Sunday morning, the chances of development remain low, with only a 20% chance of tropical formation over the next seven days. However, meteorologists will continue to track the situation for any changes.
