Facebook Marketplace scammers use bogus checks for expensive things, sheriff says

Colleton County, South Carolina — The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating many fraud incidents utilizing Facebook Marketplace transactions with bad checks for things such as UTVs and motorbikes.

According to the CCSO, scams have happened in Hollywood, Lincolnville, and James Island employing fraudulent checks that appear to have been issued by Woodforest National Bank, a bank that is frequently found at Walmart shops.

Suspects are utilizing the checks to purchase expensive products such as utility task vehicles, motorcycles, and dirt bikes, according to CCSO. However, the checks are bogus and eventually bounce after the Marketplace transaction is completed, leaving sellers without their items and the money intended to pay for them. The CCSO urged never to release products until payments were cleared.

Anyone with information on the scams should call Det. Zappoli at 843-529-6207 or email [email protected].
