For more than four decades, East Cooper Meals on Wheels has been doing more than just delivering food — it’s been delivering friendship, compassion, and community across Charleston County. This week, the organization celebrated its incredible journey and the volunteers who make it all possible.
Serving Meals and Smiles Across Five Communities
What started in the early 1980s with just 10 volunteers has grown into a massive community effort involving over 300 volunteers. Today, East Cooper Meals on Wheels delivers around 300 meals a day to residents across Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Daniel Island, and Clements Ferry.
The organization recently rebranded with a new name and message:
“Meals on Wheels: Feeding Friends, Five Communities, One Table.”
It’s a slogan that reflects the spirit of unity and shared care that’s at the heart of their mission.
Volunteers Are the Heart of the Mission
During a special volunteer appreciation luncheon, longtime volunteers shared what makes the experience so meaningful. For many, it’s not just about delivering a hot meal — it’s about creating human connection.
“It’s very gratifying. Giving back to the community is important because clients become family,” said Scott Labarowski, who has volunteered with the organization for years.
He added, “The most rewarding thing is a note at the end of the day when someone thanks you for the smiles. To provide that meal is the ability to give back.”
Meeting a Growing, Often Overlooked Need
Founder Cheryl Steadman recalled the early days and shared that the need for meal delivery hasn’t gone away — it’s grown.
“There’s a lot of hungry people, and it’s not just the poor. If you’re sick and need help, we’re here,” she said.
The organization supports people of all ages, especially homebound individuals, those recovering from illness or surgery, and seniors who simply need a helping hand.
Donations and Volunteers Keep It All Going
While the organization is powered by volunteers, donations are vital to keeping the operation running. From food costs to delivery expenses, community support ensures the meals — and the care — keep coming.
Whether you want to give your time or donate funds, East Cooper Meals on Wheels is always in need of support. Even an hour a week can make a real difference in someone’s life.
For over 40 years, East Cooper Meals on Wheels has been more than just a meal delivery service — it’s been a lifeline to those who need support, comfort, and companionship. Through the dedication of hundreds of volunteers and generous donors, this organization continues to bring not just nourishment, but hope and human connection to five communities in the Lowcountry. And as the mission grows, so does the need for others to join in — whether by giving time, resources, or simply spreading the word.
