Charleston County, South Carolina As the local election season approaches, there may be a few things you should be aware of when it comes to voting early.
Isaac Cramer, Executive Director of the Charleston County Board of Elections, predicts that 20% or less of registered voters will cast ballots in these local elections.
Following a presidential election year with record-breaking turnout, he predicts fewer voters this time around, particularly for early voting, which is very common.
In the county, there are 15 ballots for municipalities, some of which contain city official seats and other referendums that may affect you.
Cramer argues that due of the impact, he encourages you to vote earlier rather than later, knowing how busy schedules may be.
“Lower turnout means fewer people are making decisions that influence your daily life. “We want to encourage people to vote and do their research,” Cramer says.
Charleston County has 272,185 registered voters, with 21,148 under the age of 25, 96,461 between 25 and 44, 82,009 between 45 and 64, and 72,567 aged 65 and up.
The large disparity between registered voters under the age of 25 and those aged 25 to 44 is one of the reasons why many community members encourage young people to vote.
“I believe there should be an emphasis on people getting out. “Last year was a presidential election, a very important presidential election, but everything else sort of filtered down from there,” Mount Pleasant resident Jamey Carter explained.
He said this is an opportunity for the public to be heard.
“I occasionally ask people, “What, did you vote last time?” And many of the complainants do not vote. So, that is vital. “If you vote, you’ve done everything you can, so get out,” Carter remarked.
Early voting runs from October 20 to October 31, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Election Day will take place on November 8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
