Classroom Champions: Charleston instructor hopes to give resources for low-income children

Charleston, South Carolina — One Lowcountry teacher wants to provide her classroom with the things her children require to succeed.

Hailey Jacobson teaches third-grade reading at Sanders Clyde Elementary School.

“As soon as they get there I give them a big hug and they’re excited to be here,” Jacobson recalls.

Jacobson’s first year teaching in downtown Charleston since moving from Kansas.

“I moved from teaching in a Title 1 school with a mix of wealthier and lower income students to teaching in a Title 1 school with only low-income students. So, just being there for those kids, knowing that this is their happy spot and where they feel protected, is fantastic,” Jacobson says.

She refers to her students as her own.

“Our kids come in and a lot of them haven’t eaten breakfast and if they come in past 8 a.m., we don’t have that for them at the school, so we try to supply that as well as a snack every single day for them because if they’re hungry, they’re not going to learn,” says Jacobson. “They need me but I also need them because they just help make every day better.”

Jacobson claims she and her co-teacher do everything they can for the kids.

“We’re able to provide snacks, but it becomes where we’re paying our money, and it just gets so expensive, and it’s more important to us that our kids are fed and able to learn,” adds Jacobson.

However, because to funding limitations, they are not always able to meet all of the pupils’ supply demands.

“At our school, no students are expected to bring materials. “We get the money from the state, but it goes so fast,” Jacobson explains.

She is hoping to give her students with necessary equipment such as headphones, refreshments, and prizes.

“I believe that this will only help them have like It will reinforce the feeling that this is a safe location for them,” she explains.
