The Charleston County Public Library is offering a fantastic opportunity for local students in grades Pre-K through 12 with its Vision To Learn mobile eye clinics. These clinics will provide free eye exams and prescription glasses to schoolchildren across eight library locations in the month of July.
Free Eye Care for Students
The Vision To Learn clinics aim to help students who may be struggling with their vision, ensuring they start the upcoming school year with clear sight. Cassie Welch, the Children’s System Coordinator at Charleston County Public Library, explained, “They normally work with Charleston County School District (CCSD) and other area school districts during the school year, but now they are expanding their services to support kids during the summer as well.”
Why Vision Matters
Welch also highlighted how essential good vision is for a child’s success in school: “If you can’t see properly, how can you learn the skills being taught to you?” Ensuring that kids can see clearly gives them the best chance at thriving in school, making these free services an invaluable resource.
Helping Families in Need
The Vision To Learn program is committed to easing the financial burden for families, particularly those who may not be able to afford eye exams or glasses. Approximately 90% of the children served by the program come from low-income families. A West Ashley father, Blaine Kidwell, shared his gratitude for the program: “I’m lucky enough to provide [glasses] for my daughters, but for parents who may not have that opportunity… it’s amazing to see the difference in their eyes when they get their glasses. You wouldn’t want any kids to struggle with not being able to see.”
The Impact of Vision To Learn
Vision To Learn has already helped over 4 million children with vision screenings and provided 570,000 kids with prescription glasses, making a significant impact in communities nationwide.
