Charleston County officials at Bees Ferry Landfill are investigating elevated ammonia levels detected in stormwater runoff during the 2025 annual monitoring.

Violation Details

The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services issued a violation notice on December 1, 2025, after a September sample showed 30.4 mg/L of ammonia—exceeding the 10 mg/L safe limit. A prior heavy rain eroded berms, potentially allowing runoff from the composting area to bypass treatment and enter the sediment basin.

Investigation Status

Environmental Management Director Thomas Cue notes the source identification is challenging, possibly off-site, with an action plan submitted including enhanced quarterly monitoring for ammonia. Operations manager Nathan Haynes emphasizes proactive fixes for any seepages, and no uncontrolled toxic liquids were found during inspections.

Recent Improvements

The landfill passed inspections in the past two years after prior violations for litter control, soil cover, and equipment issues, reflecting better management since 2023. Crews continue berm repairs and structural checks to prevent recurrence.
