Berkeley County, South Carolina – Multiple agencies met for Berkeley County’s annual Emergency Services Day, a community-oriented event.
Berkeley County citizens flocked to Cypress Gardens on Saturday, which housed the various entities involved in Berkeley County.
Firefighters and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office were the first responders on the site.
People were able to start conversations with these leaders about what they believe is necessary to improve the town.
“It’s time for families, parents, and children to come out. We can chat with them about any challenges they may be experiencing in their areas. Cpl. Kody Ayres of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office stated there are ways for us to come out and help them.
The program aims to familiarize people with county agencies.
“This raises awareness among those walking by. People stopped by our trailer today who had no idea who we were. And we’ve been around for a long time,” said David Charles Hedleston of the Berkeley County Community Emergency Response Team.
Many departments brought their vehicles to provide families a firsthand peek at their daily operations. Residents were able to learn about their employment, something the CERT team believes is critical.
“Absolutely critical because awareness is everything and we all have our busy lives and some people may not even be aware that they can participate in a community group like search or forestry or fire rescue or whatever,” she said.
The event also attempts to increase confidence among Berkeley County residents and first responders.
“Our goal for these events is to come out and build trust, have better relationships with them, give personal contacts, that way people can reach out to us and we can be there for their issues,” she said.
Departments from all throughout Berkeley County came to speak with individuals about their jobs.
