The Berkeley Animal Center has announced a new emergency moratorium on animal intakes due to severe overcrowding at the shelter. Effective immediately, the shelter will only accept animals that are injured, in danger, or pose an active threat to others.
Urgent Request for Community Help
The shelter is urging the community to step in and help by fostering or adopting animals that are waiting for their forever homes. Executive Director Heather McDowell expressed the shelter’s dire situation: “We are in an emergency, and we need the community’s help now more than ever. We are urging those who have never fostered or adopted to consider opening their homes and hearts to an animal in need.”
Reduced Adoption Fees to Encourage Rehoming
To encourage adoption, the Berkeley Animal Center has reduced its adoption fees. The new adoption fees are as follows:
Puppies: $100
Adult Dogs: $25
Kittens and Adult Cats: $25
Missing Pets and Reclaiming Animals
The shelter is also asking individuals who are missing a pet to check with them, as lost animals may have been brought in. In a move to further assist, reclaim fees have been waived until further notice.
