Rashiem Russell, 29, from West Philadelphia, was arrested Friday at 11 a.m. in Darlington, South Carolina, for the brutal assault of a crossing guard outside Walnut Street Elementary School in Darby Borough, Pennsylvania.

Assault Details

The attack unfolded Monday after 3:30 p.m. during student dismissal; Russell allegedly drove aggressively, parked after being flagged to stop, chased the guard down the sidewalk, and punched her unconscious in front of children. Surveillance captured the incident, and his gold 2009 Nissan Altima was later spotted in Philadelphia with two women inside, one confirming his flight south to family.

Arrest and Charges

U.S. Marshals tracked him via family ties in Darlington, crediting inter-agency cooperation; he’s held awaiting extradition on aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats, harassment, and related counts. State Sen. Anthony Williams’ $5,000 reward will be paid to tipsters.

Victim Impact

The anonymous guard, who suffered physical and emotional trauma including facial swelling, has resigned. Darby Mayor Joar Dahn vowed full prosecution, calling it a “cowardly act.”
