According to a report, a Florence County deputy was speeding before the horrific incident.

A South Carolina Highway Patrol report details factors in the fatal May 20, 2025, crash that killed Florence County Deputy Nate Ansay on Olanta Highway (Highway 301).

Crash Circumstances

Ansay was northbound at 77 mph in a 55 mph zone, deemed “travelling too fast for conditions,” crossed left of center, and collided head-on with southbound SUV driver Mark Browder.

Browder filed a June 2025 lawsuit against Florence County Sheriff’s Office, alleging Ansay overcorrected from the shoulder, veered into his lane at high speed due to negligence in control and speed. The suit claims gross negligence and improper hiring/training/supervision by the department.
