The woman who died after her vehicle rolled into a lagoon on Hilton Head Island has been identified as Helen Connors, 90, of Bluffton. She died on the scene at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, when the 2000 Lincoln SUV she was driving left the road and entered a lagoon at 3 South Beach Lagoon Drive in the Sea Pines community.

How the incident unfolded

Connors was the only person in the vehicle, and state troopers believe the SUV rolled into the water Tuesday evening but went unnoticed until the next morning. Beaufort County deputies were notified around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday after fire crews reported finding the submerged SUV; the call was then transferred to the sheriff’s office.

Who is investigating

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office confirmed Connors’ identity and stated that the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigating agency for the crash. No further details about the cause of the vehicle leaving the road have been released publicly.
