A state agency has awarded a $1 million grant for vital infrastructure projects on James Island

James Island, South Carolina — The South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority granted the City of Charleston more than $1 million for a drainage project on James Island.

The award will support the Central Park Drainage Improvement Project, which intends to enhance drainage on Central Park Road, Riley Road, and the access road beneath the EME Apartment complex.

According to city officials, the money will go toward the building of larger pipes to mitigate floods in the area.

“The city is able to use some of its own money from, of course, from the taxpayers, to be able to design and permit and then try to provide some cost matching into projects, but it lets us leverage that city money by going for these grants to do much more work than we could have done with just that city money,” Matthew Fountain, Charleston’s Director of Storm Water Management, said.

Aside from the James Island drainage project, the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority provided funding for 21 other projects.
