Summerville, S.C. – A freight train struck and killed a pedestrian Friday night near the Main Street crossing in downtown Summerville, according to the Summerville Police Department.

The incident occurred at 7:26 p.m. when an unidentified pedestrian was walking on the tracks near the Summerville Museum. The Norfolk Southern freight train, traveling eastbound toward Charleston, struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The intersection of Main Street and Cedar Street was temporarily closed for the investigation but has since reopened.

Darrell Butcher, a musician performing at a nearby Wine and Tapas Bar, described the moment as eerie. “It was a very eerie feeling… I didn’t want to be insensitive, but had obvious suspicions when I saw the train stop,” Butcher said.

Fortunately, the train crew was not injured during the incident. Authorities are investigating the cause of the tragedy.
